국민의힘 국회의원들이 윤석열차 보고,

영국 만화가 스티브 브라이트의 작품을 표절한 것이라고 주장했습니다.

This student has not in any way violated my work. It's very clear any similarity was coincidence, not intent (this happens all the time in the editorial cartoon world), and the student has done absolutely nothing wrong in my view, and indeed, should be commended for their obvious skill with pen and brush.

I'd be astonished (and flattered) if my cartoon even inspired the student's use of the same analogous device, but that is very different from plagiarism. There have been many times in my career where I and my fellow cartoonists have actually come up with very similar ideas on the same day, published the next. Therefore, impossible to have involved plagiarism, but had they been on separate days, the suspicion could be levelled. But here, it's a completely different subject, with different characters, and the only real similarity is the use of the blue train. My train is very clearly Thomas the Tank Engine, whereas the student's train is not - merely coloured blue, and with a 'face'. A similar concept, but completely different idea. Absolutely not plagiarism, in my view.

I have in fact used the Thomas idea on at least one previous occasion, again with a completely different subject matter (Angela Merkel was the face, and the subject was the EU Gravy Train), which could have levelled the preposterous allegation that I had plagiarised myself. In fact, I'd forgotten all about it until I looked back in my files at a later date. As I say, these things happen all the time - even within your own work.

As you allude to in your email, I think the far greater question here in over the concern that anyone (least of all a student with a clear flair for cartooning, who ought to be praised) be condemned in any way for a satirical 'poke' at the Government. Thankfully, it's not only allowed in this country, but actively encouraged as I'm sure you know, and the profession of editorial cartooning would not exist without it.

In other words, a classic storm in a teacup, with worrying undertones.
